Reflecting on Women’s History Month

By Laura Gross

As a certified woman owned business and one with a mission to make the world a better place, Scott Circle Communications (SCC) always enjoys working with clients who also help make the world a better place for women. From issues such as equal pay to healthcare, we have helped advocate on behalf of issues that make women’s lives better. And since it’s National Women’s History Month, I thought I would take a look back on SCC’s own history with organizations focused on helping women.

When I was a teenager, I remember sending a letter (yes, an actual handwritten letter, not an email or a text message) to the National Organization for Women (NOW) asking for more information and how I could get involved. Who would have thought that decades later, my firm would be working with NOW? Some days, I still can’t get over it. For eight years, our team has been on the front lines advising and implementing various communications activities for important issues such as workplace harassment, domestic violence and immigration that directly impact the lives of women and girls across the country.

We recently also worked with a new organization, The Ascend Fund. This fund, powered by Panorama Global, provides philanthropic capital and support to organizations that are dedicated to recruiting, training and getting women elected to office.

We have also had the privilege of working with many organizations that are led by women too. I remember a woman who led an organization called me once and said it was nice to see that you are woman owned and have so many women working for you too. She later became a client.

Helping women is part of our culture – whether it’s through our paid client work or our volunteer work. So, when my friend, Dana Marlowe – the founder of I Support the Girls, started collecting bras and feminine hygiene products for women experiencing homelessness, impoverishment or distress, I said, “how can we help?” Ever since then, we have advised on communications strategies, media interviews and trained chapter leaders on how to approach and work with the media in their communities.

I tell many people that we have a thank you note type of culture at SCC, which means we hand write thank you notes when we are done with an engagement – we also thank our friends and former clients when they refer us to potential new clients. However, instead of sending a gift for our referral network, this past year, we started making a donation in their honor instead. Our non-profit partner is N Street Village, an organization in Washington, DC that empowers homeless and low-income women to claim their highest quality of life by offering services, housing and advocacy.  We also have an annual community service project at N Street Village too.

I am so grateful to all the professional networks that are focused on helping women grow their businesses. I’ve attended trainings while growing a fabulous network of other women business owners – big shout out to Her Corner, Women’s Presidents’ Educational Organization (WPEO), and Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC).

I am truly motivated by helping others through our work. And I’m especially motivated to partner with organizations that are helping women.

Happy Women’s History Month!
