The Inner Circle Round Up: Media News You Can Use November 2020

By Dee Donavanik

Well, the election may be (mostly) over, but it still seems like politics is dominating the news cycle. At least when it comes to traditional mainstream media, but that’s why it’s so important to expand not only the types of outlets that you read/watch/listen to, but also the journalists you are trying to establish relationships with. From new online platforms, to more newsletters and even MORE podcasts, there’s always another opportunity around the corner. Have you seen anything interesting that’s caught your attention?  If so, definitely let us know: @ScottCircle!

Patch: Local Outlet Takes on Newsletters

Per Axios, “Patch, the hyperlocal local digital news company, has built a new software platform called "Patch Labs" that lets local news reporters publish their own newsletters and website.” As traditional local newspapers may be on the decline, online opportunities like blogs and newsletters are on the rise in their place. They’re also great opportunities for journalists who may have gained a dedicated following to generate more revenue for themselves.

The Inner Circle Take:  Newsletters are becoming the new “morning papers.” It’s how people get their information each day, and because there are so many options, it’s easier to make sure you’re subscribed to one that aligns with your key interests, whether it’s a key industry or a local market. Make sure you don’t discount this format when conducting your outreach.

Vox Editor Launches New Project

Former Vox Editor-in-Chief- Lauren Williams will be leaving the site in February to launch a new project in mid 2021. Per Williams, the platform - Capital B - will be “a local and national nonprofit news organization serving Black audiences…(and) will provide high-quality civic journalism tailored to Black communities across the country, aimed at serving audiences the essential information needed to live their lives.”

The Inner Circle Take:  We’re excited to see a new outlet enter this space. As Capital B will be Black-led, its team will bring an important perspective in knowing what information will help  “equip Black Americans with accessible, accurate, and need-to know reporting.” Keep this outlet on your list, especially if you have clients who may be a useful resource who have relevant experiences and expertise to share.

Grist Launches First Podcast

Grist, a nonprofit environmental media organization has launched Temperature Check, a weekly podcast covering climate, race and culture.  Per CEO Brady Piñero Walkinshaw, “The issues of climate change and social justice have never been more urgent than they are in 2020…  We aim to make these issues approachable — and we’re excited to explore them in this new podcast through the lens of pop culture.”

The Inner Circle Take: As we’ve mentioned before, climate is a huge issue that intersects not only with environmental issues, but also with social justice, economics, health and much more. If you work with clients in the advocacy space, there’s likely some way that their work is impacted by climate justice or climate policy.

Conan to the (HBO) Max

Conan O’Brien is ending his TBS late-night show in June after 10 seasons and moving to HBO Max for a new variety show. Details are still scarce about what the show will involve, but the “Conan Without Borders” specials - where O’Brien has travelled to other countries for field specials, will be a recurring segment.

The Inner Circle Take:  We don’t know what to expect quite yet, but we’ll be sure to keep an eye out to see how Conan plans to keep us entertained!
