The Inner Circle Round Up: Media News You Can Use December 2020
This year has been all about learning how to adapt. As communications professionals, we’ve had to deal with one of the most challenging news cycles ever in terms of securing media coverage. It’s been incredibly difficult to break through to some major outlets who have been heavily focused on the election and the pandemic… which is why it’s so important to expand the pool of your sources of information. With more online websites, newsletters and podcasts launching, there’s always some opportunity to reach your target audience that you may not have considered!
In a twist on our #RoundUp series, the Scott Circle Communication team shares some of their favorite new (or new to them) outlets that are now in their regular rotation. What are some of yours? Let us know: @ScottCircle!
Outlet: PRISM
Dee’s Take: We know it’s important to get your news from more than one sort of media outlet because it’s important to take different perspectives into consideration. Many organizations are now making more of an effort in their DEI (diversity, equity, & inclusion) efforts, which also means centering voices that may not have always been at the forefront. PRISM provides a great opportunity for this, as a BIPOC-led (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) nonprofit news outlet. The outlet features hard news, opinions, essays and more from a variety of “on the ground” experts, covering everything from gender equality to racial justice.
Outlet: The David Chang Show (Podcast)
Matheson’s Take: Making new friends hasn’t been high on my list of priorities since March 2020, but listening to the David Chang Show makes me feel like I made a couple new ones. This (new to me) podcast loosely centered around food, invites guests to discuss culture, politics, their lives since COVID-19 and everything in between. Hearing how people from different walks of life are adapting to the many changes we have faced this year is intriguing and serves up a couple laughs along the way.
Outlet: Throughline (Podcast)
Kellie’s Take: “Every headline has a history” is the tagline for the weekly podcast the Throughline, launched by NPR right before COVID-19 hit. Each week hosts Rund Abdelfatah & Ramtin Arablouei take a timely national issue and put it into historical context. Learning about the past surrounding topics like the voting rights, health insurance and police in America, helps create a deeper understanding of the world we live in now and may point the way toward possible solutions. To me this is a must-listen for policymakers and an informed electorate. After all, as the past four years have shown with everything from racism to pandemics, those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
Outlet: Hello Alice newsletter
Laura’s Take: This year has been quite a challenge for business owners. Whether it was navigating the PPP loan, transitioning to a 100% remote workforce or helping clients navigate the most authentic way to respond to the Black Lives Matter movement - this year we were all thrown a curveball. I relied on many of my friends that owned businesses for help, however I also relied on many online resources. I especially liked the weekly emails from Hello Alice, a platform for women business owners. The advice and community I discovered was invaluable as I tried to navigate this pandemic. I look forward to the weekly emails to get a fresh idea on team management or just to learn how to create a strategic plan for a year that has been anything but predictable.
Outlet: Girls Night In Newsletter
Daniella’s Take: 2020 felt like the rise of the newsletter - with so much information swirling around us, aggregated content is helpful! This particular newsletter took on a new level of importance for me over the last year as it focuses on all things wellness for women, including topics such as mental health, relationships and community. These weekly Friday newsletters are a breath of fresh air as it not only pulls together relevant news information but it also provides insight, resources and tools on the topic of self-care and what that means to women today.
