The Inner Circle Round Up: Media News You Can Use February 2020
Welcome to the February edition of the Inner Circle Round Up! This month we have new opportunities to keep you busy, like podcasts, channels and expanded local new coverage. Follow us on Twitter and share any opportunities you came across this month at @ScottCircle.
The New York Times: Expanded Local News Coverage
The New York Times plans to add three local beats to its news coverage. The new beats will focus on suburbs in the Southwest, religion in the South and more rural areas. This expands on the outlet’s dozen domestic bureaus.
The Inner Circle Take: Hooray for local news coverage! This marks an important step to cover historically underreported areas on a national scale. If your target audience is one of these new beats, this could be a good opportunity to get national attention to your local issue.
Black News Channel: Sole African American-Led News Network
Black News Network, a new 24/7 broadcast news network aims to fill a “void in representation in national news.” As the country’s sole African American led news network, the channel focuses on the unique perspective and experience of African American communities. Programming will include morning and primetime news segments, along with a health series. The network is headquartered in Tallahassee, Florida and hopes to have bureaus in Washington, New York and Atlanta.
The Inner Circle Take: We are excited to see a new news channel dedicated to lifting up the perspective and experience of the African American community. We think this is a great opportunity to raise the profile of black leadership that you work with and raise the issues that directly affect black Americans.
Government Executive has launched a new podcast to explore federal news stories driving the agenda. Through conversations with editors, reporters and experts, the podcast will take you behind the reporting and provide a unique way to access government news. The podcast aims to be “digestible yet immersive” and will be around 20 minutes in length.
The Inner Circle Take: Many outlets are investing in podcasts to provide their audience with a new format to digest news. If GovExec is a part of your regular outreach with reporters or an outlet you’ve been meaning to explore, this new podcast is a great opportunity to directly reach their audience of federal workers.
