GOT Communicator of the Week- Episode 2: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

Each week our team will select a GoT Communicator of the Week, highlighting the character who understood their audience, stayed on brand, and most effectively communicated their message.

More often than not, Brienne has been the strong and silent type. A noble service-woman who is dedicated to her cause, this episode she recognizes that instead of just standing in the background as usual, she has an obligation to speak up. And she does so on behalf of the perceived enemy, Jamie Lannister. Daenerys disregards Tyrion’s attempts to defend his brother, with Sansa showing similar disdain for the man who destroyed her family.

Jamie pleads his case that this “goes beyond loyalty” and is about survival. Just when we think he’s about to get the Littlefinger treatment, Brienne stands up to defend him and risks speaking truth to power. She knows her audience - particularly Daenerys - is skeptical. Dany does not know Brienne and has no reason to believe her…. but Sansa does, and trusts Brienne with her life. Brienne tells a compelling story, full of her harrowing experiences. She reiterates that Jamie is, in fact, honorable, and without him, neither she nor Sansa would not be alive. Brienne has a well-established reputation for being honest and good and - as a woman of few words --  when she does choose to speak, she commands her audience’s attention and respect.
