LAURA GROSS, PRINCIPAL
As the founder and principal of Scott Circle, Laura Gross leads the public relations side of the business – overseeing strategic planning and program management for clients. More than just a thinker, however, Laura is actively engaged in business operations and client service.
Prior to founding Scott Circle in 2006, Laura held a senior communications role with a national political committee, a political action committee and served as spokesperson for a high-profile politician with dozens of requests from the media every day. She was also senior vice president at a digital communications firm, where she created Internet communications strategies for politicians and non-governmental organizations. She experienced how newsrooms operate as a member of the NPR public relations team, promoting national programs and on-air personalities. Laura was also director of The Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards – planning numerous events and working directly with a wide array of high-profile people.
With an aim to make a difference, Laura began her career as a member of The White House domestic and foreign traveling advance staff. She was appointed by the president of The United States as a press officer at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), managing press stories that appeared on national newscasts and the front pages of newspapers around the world.
Laura’s work has been recognized by the Public Relations Society of America, International Association of Business Communicators, PR News and the American Association of Political Consultants, as well as her alma mater, The University of Georgia, from which she holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
A creative and dynamic convention management executive, Jeff Shulman established and oversees Scott Circle’s event, conference and destination management capabilities.
Prior to joining Scott Circle in 2013, Jeff spent more than a decade as the Director of National Events at an international nonprofit where he was responsible for the implementation of domestic and overseas conferences and programs. Among his responsibilities, Jeff led the planning process and execution of the organization’s citywide 13,000+ person annual gathering in Washington D.C. In addition, Jeff led the preparation and implementation of more than 350 annual events, including board meetings, leadership development programs, donor appreciation and membership recruitment events. In the international arena, he planned and led leadership delegations overseas to meet with senior government officials in prominent world capitals.
Jeff began his career as a member of the national advance team for a presidential campaign. Following the campaign, he served on the President’s Inaugural Committee and was later appointed as a Special Assistant in the Office of Public Liaison at the White House. He also directed all event logistics for the 1997 G-8 Environment Ministers Summit in Miami, Florida and served as the Director of Advance in the Office of the Vice President.
Jeff holds a bachelor of arts in history from Brandeis University.
SARAH COPPERSMITH, VICE PRESIDENT
Sarah Coppersmith leads public relations campaigns and media outreach projects across the spectrum of Scott Circle’s clients. During her time at Scott Circle, she has created and implemented a public relations campaign for an association, directed media logistics for a national conference with over 300 members of the media in attendance, and led the communications effort for a prominent lobbying organization.
Sarah joined Scott Circle from the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), an independent non-profit created in conjunction with, but independent from, First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign. As a communications manager with PHA, she helped build their communications program as a start-up organization, handling media messaging, social media strategy and assisting with planning and execution of PHA’s inaugural Building a Healthier Future summit, which had more than 700 attendees.
Earlier in her career, Sarah served as press secretary for Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-Ariz.) where she handled media relations, social media and political messaging in an extremely competitive district in metropolitan Phoenix. She also served as research director on Mitchell’s re-election campaign in 2008, as well as handled constituent correspondence and various legislative issues in his congressional office.
A graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, Sarah also worked at Women’s Campaign International, assisting with work in emerging democracies and post-conflict regions that advanced opportunities for women to actively participate in public advocacy and political processes.
Noa Rabinowitz brings nearly a decade of experience managing and executing events, generating media coverage, and fostering lasting partnerships with clients and vendors.
Prior to her tenure at Scott Circle, Noa served as the Deputy Director of National Events and day-to-day team manager for an international non-profit that hosted hundreds of annual events. Ranging from small board meetings to a 13,000+ person, three-day conference, Noa has shepherded countless events from concept to completion and prides herself on her devotion to all details, big and small.
Noa began her career as a public relations specialist in New York City where she directed media outreach for the publishing and entertainment industries. She later transitioned to the Washington, DC market where she developed and executed media strategies for prominent clients in the healthcare industry.
Noa holds a bachelor of arts in American Studies from Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City.
Megan Piferi drives events and public relations campaigns for a variety of Scott Circle’s clients combining both digital and traditional media relations.
Before joining Scott Circle, Megan worked on national public awareness campaigns including home safety, heart health and hunger relief as well as travel and consumer brands allowing her to develop superb national, local and online media contacts. In addition, she is a social media maven, developing multi-faceted blueprints across platforms for a variety of clients while also handling day-to-day online activities.
In addition to her sharp media relations skills, she also enjoys preparing and executing events for clients from trade shows, media events, press conferences and promotional consumer events.
A graduate of George Mason University, Megan earned a BA in Communication with a concentration in Public Relations and minor in Business Administration.
MAUREEN SALAZAR, SENIOR ASSOCIATE
Maureen Higgins works closely with Scott Circle clients to tell their story to the public through traditional and online media as well as events.
Previously, Maureen served as a communications specialist for the 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East where she used her public relations skills to advocate on behalf of more than 10,000 healthcare workers in the Maryland/DC region. Maureen began her career as a media relations assistant, and later, deputy communications director for the Maryland Democratic Party where her work focused on engaging with the media, as well as planning and promoting annual events.
Maureen holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from George Mason University and a master’s degree in communications from The American University.
Claire Noble’s diverse event background brings creativity and versatility to Scott Circle. Pairing logistical expertise with an eye for detail, Claire helps execute unique experiences of all kinds.
Before joining Scott Circle, Claire served as Special Assistant to the Chairman at the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) where she worked in Congressional and White House Affairs. During her tenure, she conducted targeted outreach to constituent groups, managed messaging and publicity for NEH-funded projects nationwide, and organized major events highlighting NEH programming.
Claire has worked with both federal and corporate partners and continues to foster these relationships through superb communication skills and reliable excellence in event planning and promotion.
Emily Helpern supports public relations campaigns, as well as media outreach and logistics projects for Scott Circle’s clients.
With a background in public affairs and strategic communications, Emily has experience working with clients across various sectors including education, health care, technology and human rights. Prior to joining Scott Circle, Emily served as public affairs intern at VOX Global, where she supported the education, non-profit and health care practice groups in research, development and execution of strategic communications campaigns.
Emily holds a bachelor’s degree in communications and journalism from The George Washington University and a master’s degree in social policy from The London School of Economics.
Matheson Williams Sharp administers daily clerical duties and supports the Scott Circle team.
Prior to Scott Circle, Matheson worked at The Williamsburg Winery as the Corporate Events Supervisor, coordinating and implementing a wide array of events and functions. With an attention to detail and excellent interpersonal skills, Matheson brings energy and a unique perspective to the organization.
A graduate of Hood College in Maryland, Matheson holds a bachelors degree in Communication Arts and Journalism.
